Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today said that household electricity consumers are paying more than the industries in the State.
Speaking to media persons here, Sangma said that there are multiple issues that have to be addressed in order to improve the financial health of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL).
“We do not have the full power to determine the rates that are being charged by the MeECL and it is determined by the regulatory commission and today in certain cases the regulatory commission is putting up rates that are below the market rate which means the household consumers are paying more than the industries.”
“The consumers are paying Rs 6 per unit while the industries are paying Rs 5 and these are rates set up by the regulatory commission in spite of repeated requests that the industries should pay more we have not got a positive result or response from them,” he added.
Sangma said that the State government is trying to resolve all those issues including that the rates that are being charged to the consumers is much lower to the cost that MeECL is bearing today.
“Hence, these things have to be changed if we want to see any kind of long term improvement in the financial health of the MeECL,” he added.
