The Ri-Bhoi unit of the Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) today expressed concerns regarding the safety of pigs brought into Meghalaya from other states.
In a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, HITO complained that unregulated transportation of pigs from other states, particularly Uttar Pradesh, into Meghalaya could lead to the spread of disease, such as swine flu.
The organization emphasised the need for stricter regulations, including mandatory health certifications from qualified veterinary officials, thorough inspections at entry points and a complete ban on pig transportation unless these protocols are strictly followed.
According to HITO, the DC assured that the matter will be looked into within a week.
