A 25-year-old woman was killed and five co-passengers were injured when the SUV they were travelling in collided with a stationary truck parked on the side of National Highway 6 at Shangbangla in Ri-Bhoi this morning.
The deceased was identified as Namrita Borah, a resident of Kamargaon, Golaghat, Assam. She and the others were travelling in an Assam-registered Hyundai Alcazar (AS 01EV 9578) from Shillong towards Guwahati when the incident occurred at around 4:45am.
The driver, Md Ismail Hoque Choudhury (33), was attempting to overtake another vehicle when the Alcazar rammed into the back of a truck.
The incident occurred while the car was attempting to overtake another vehicle. The other passengers – Anyatul Watus (39), Gayatri Borah (25), Pragya Dihingia (29) and Meriganka Borah (26) – received injuries along with the driver.
Namrita was rushed to Nongpoh Civil Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by doctors there. She had suffered severe head injuries sustained in the impact. An autopsy was conducted at the same hospital before the body was handed over to family members.
The vehicle suffered major damage due to the force of the collision. Ri-Bhoi police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
