The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) today met Meghalaya Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh urging him to hold a special session to repeal the controversial Regulation of Gaming Act 2021.
Led by president Donbok Dkhar, the group told the Speaker that a discussion and a debate into the act is important in the August house so as people get a clear picture of the government’s stand on the matter.
It may be mentioned that following stiff opposition from various quarters on introduction of casinos and online gambling in the State, especially religious groups, the government has decided to repeal the act.
Taxation Minister, James K Sangma had said that he would push for its repeal and that the State government is in the process of preparing the draft ordinance.
The Department of Taxation had introduced the act for the regulations of gaming in the State last year.
