The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO), in Ri Bhoi has lodged a complaint against the All Meghalaya Poultry Supplier and Retailer Association for illegally collecting money from local businessmen.
The matter was brought to the attention of Deputy Commissioner Abilash Baranwal in a letter today.
According to HITO, each businessman has to shell out Rs 30,000 per truck carrying poultry to the association which amounts to extortion.
District president Shaniah Nongrum also alleged that there are no proper restrictions or checks being carried out by the veterinary department of poultry entering Meghalaya, raising concerns over the management of such activities.
He said that the organisation has sought the intervention of the district administration to put an end to such collection which is illegal and emphasised on the need of proper inspections and medical checks of poultry entering the state.
