Nongkrem MDC Lambor Malngiang has sought answers from the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on its decision to declare Mawsaw locality in Umphyrnai as a separate village.
The KHADC recognition was also opposed by the dorbar shnongs of Umphyrnai and Ur-Masi-U Joh.
Malngiang told reporters that Mawsaw village was established by an order signed by Pynshngain N Syiem before he resigned as Deputy Chief Executive Member in charge of Elaka.
He said that according to the KHAD (Administration of Elaka) Act, 1991, to establish a new village the district council requires the approval of the parent village.
The MDC said he would send a letter to the Chief Executive Member and that he would discuss in detail with the two dorbars and also with the Syiem of Hima Khyrim on the matter.
Yesterday, KHADC Chief Executive Member Pyniaid Sing Syiem had said that the Kharkongor clan had demanded the establishment of a new village since 2016 and the final decision on the matter lies with the district council.
The dorbar Shnong of Ur Masi U Joh had alleged that the creation of a new village laims was political given the upcoming district council election.
Earlier in December 23, 2024, the dorbar shnong Umphyrnai, under Nongkrem constituency decided to boycott the 2025 Khasi Hill Autonomous District Council (KHADC) election for granting the status of village to Mawsaw locality.
