The department has advised citizens to watch out for early warning signs of cold-related conditions such as shivering, cold and pale skin, fatigue, confusion, slurred speech, fumbling hands, and drowsiness.
Staying informed about temperature updates and taking preventive measures is crucial, the department said while recommending staying indoors to avoid unnecessary exposure to the cold.
It also recommended citizens to wear multiple layers of loose, lightweight clothing to retain body heat, protect extremities like tip of fingers and ears with hats, mufflers, and insulated footwear, drink warm fluids regularly and keep skin moisturized, eating healthy food and fruits to maintain energy levels, to pay special attention to the needs of the elderly and children.
Things to avoid recommended are prolonged exposure to cold conditions, ignoring shivering, as it is a sign of the body losing heat, massaging frostbitten areas, alcohol consumption, which impairs judgment and increases the risk of hypothermia, no fluids to an unconscious or semi-conscious person and to never leave fires unattended or burn materials like paper, charcoal, or candles in enclosed spaces to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
