The Meghalaya and Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA) today said they are surprised that the BJP State Mahila Morcha chose to distribute eco-friendly bags to vendors when in reality the party has not done anything to take up their rights.
The BJP State Mahila Morcha today carried out distribution of eco friendly bags to various vendors in Fire Brigade, Nongthymmai and Laitumukrah area under its ‘Say No to Plastic Campaign’.
The association in a statement today said past and present governments have failed to implement laws to alleviate the problems of street vendors and hawkers even though the BJP is part of the MDA coalition government.
General secretary of the association, Shane Thabah stated that when the lockdown was imposed last year due to Covid-19 no government and parties have spoken about their plight. He said that even the Chief Secretary did not follow the Centre’s letter directing states to help and aid wage earners.
Thabah said that the association will not buy the antics of the BJP BJP Mahila Morcha and that they cannot treat street vendors and hawkers like garbage.
The association also reminded the State government to implement central laws and urged its members not to fall trap to gimmicks.
