Shillong, Sep 28: The West Jaintia Hills police and state Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) conducted a joint operation that resulted in the seizure of 512.63g of heroin with a market value of Rs 2.5 crore.
The operation, led by WJH Additional Superintendent of Police Jason Mairom intercepted a Tata vehicle near Phra Mer Police Traffic Cell, which was traveling from Khliehriat to Jowai. Two occupants, Chuchung Serto and Thanggin Towthang, both residents of Manipur, were taken into custody.
A thorough search of the vehicle and suspects uncovered a cleverly concealed compartment containing 50 soap boxes filled with heroin. Additional items seized included Indian rupees as well as minor amounts of currency from South Korea, Kazakhstan, Myanmar and two mobile handsets.
The police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and are conducting follow-up investigations to trace the supply chain and identify potential cross-border links.
