Shillong, Nov 14: The Human Rights International, Garo Hills Region has demanded an independent inquiry into the alleged negligence of duty by a nurse at the Chokpot CHC that led to the death of a woman.
According to the group, one Kenjila Ch Marak a resident of Chokpot, South Garo Hills died at the Tura Maternity and Child Hospital in Tura due to the “deliberate negligence” by an ANM, Jesamina R. Marak.
In a letter to South Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, the president of the group, Clebirth R. Sangma said a formal complaint was lodged with the Health Minister two months back.
He said no action has been initiated against the concerned ANM by the Health Department. “The continuous delay strongly indicates an attempt to shield the accused staff from disciplinary measures and transfer, which has deeply eroded our confidence in the department’s commitment to justice,” Sangma said.
Calling for an independent probe to be headed by an officer not below the rank of Additional Deputy Commissioner for a fair, unbiased, and transparent investigation within three days, the group said based on the findings disciplinary action should be taken against the nurse.
Sangma said the report should also be submitted to the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission for it to seek ex-gratia support for the next of kin of the deceased.
