The Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers Association (KJDSTA) has urged the State government to exempt teachers from the Meghalaya Education Grant (MEG) scheme.
The request was made by the association during a meeting convened by the Education Department chaired by Commissioner & Secretary Vijay Mantri today.
During the meeting thorough discussion was held on the scheme aimed to provide assistance to schools who receive grant-in- aid which include deficit, ad-hoc and SSA schools.
KJDSTA President AM Lyngwa said, “We want the government to give us an assurance that if the MEG is implemented, the allocation to the deficit teachers should continue. We have been promised that the current deficit teachers will be exempt from the MEG.”
According to her, the jobs of deficit school teachers will no longer be available once the teachers retire. “As an association, we want the deficit system to continue. However, the government has proposed to abolish the deficit system, which may be good in the future,” she said.
The government’s intention is to reduce the number of teachers and bring them under one MEG, she stated, adding, “The government’s concern is that there are still teachers who receive very little salary, which is only Rs.10, 000 or Rs.20, 000 differences between the salaries of teachers in the state”.
Besides, she said that benefits such as the Centralised Provident Fund (CPF) and pension will continue to apply to deficit teachers as well as newly appointed teachers.
