The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has taken suo moto cognizance into the unfortunate death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child at the Maternal and Child Hospital in Jowai.
The MHRC has issued a notice today to the Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare to conduct an enquiry and to submit a detailed report.
Pynche Bareh (37), from Jalaphet in East Jaintia Hills, was referred to the Jowai hospital on Jun 3 from Sutnga Community Health Centre where she initially went for treatment for bleeding.
On June 5, she reported abdominal pain at 5:30pm and then again at 6:20pm and her condition began to deteriorate from 8:10pm. She was finally declared dead at 9:15pm. Her baby also did not survive.
An inquiry was also constituted by the West Jaintia Hills district administration consisting of Additional Deputy Commissioner B Blah, the District Medical and Health Officer and a gynaecologist and paediatrician deputed by the EJH district administration. The committee has been asked to submit its report by June 9.
