A classified document informing about regrouping of the inactive Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) is in circulation on social media.
This would be the biggest concern for Meghalaya, especially the Garo Hills region, which had for years now been living peacefully since its dreaded leader, Sohan D Shira was gunned down in 2018.
As per the reports, the letter was written by West Garo Hills Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSB) dated May 11, 2023. The letter states that meetings are being conducted in various places in Garo Hills such as Jadi, Nongal, and Chalang to “mobilise” the youth to join the outfit.
As per the letter, nearly 500 youth have already been recruited and are being sent to Nagaland and Burma to pursue basic training courses. It is also suspected that some prominent businessmen are aiding the outfit to regroup.
It may be mentioned in 2021, former chief minister Dr Mukul Sangma had pressed the alarm bell that the ULFA is supporting the regrouping of people who have been in different militant outfits in the Garo Hills region and western parts of Meghalaya including West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills.
