The Garo Hills unit of the All Meghalaya Muster Roll Progressive Workers’ Union (AMMRPWU) met yesterday to discuss the non-payment of their wages and have demanded that their dues be cleared during the first week of November, failing which there will be unrest.
The union claimed that the Agriculture, Horticulture, Water Resources and Public Health Engineering (the latter in Ampati and North Tura divisions) departments have not credited their salaries and workers will hold protests against them if their dues are not cleared.
“It is the government authorities who do not abide by the rules (on salaries) and that is why the muster roll workers are facing difficulties. Therefore, whatever rules the government has made need to be followed by the authorities of every department earnestly,” said local union president Polsing Momin.
The union also wants the regularisation of long-service workers, with salaries at the appropriate levels as set by the Labour Department.
