The Congress has invited applications from interested candidates willing to contest the Gambegre by-elections even as the final say on the matter would lie with former MLA Saleng A Sangma.
The Gambegre constituency is lying vacant after sitting MLA Saleng won the Tura Lok Sabha election after which he resigned as MLA of the constituency.
Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Vincent H Pala said that the by-election is a must win poll for the party and expressed confidence that the party will retain the seat considering the positive Congress wave that has swept the Garo Hills.
“It is must win election for Conrad Sangma and Zenith Sangma (Trinamool) is putting up his wife Sadhiarani Sangma who is also Mukul Sangma’s sister-in- law so it is the most interesting election in Garo Hills, this time,” Pala said.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s wife Mehtab Chandee Sangma appears to be the front runner for the NPP ticket to contest the by-election.
The Election Commission has yet to announce the date for the by-poll. The by-election has to be held within six months and therefore it could be held sometime within this year.
