The All Meghalaya 4th Teachers Association, Garo Hills unit continues to repeat their demand even as their petitions continue to fall on deaf ears since 2017.
The association is pushing for an enhancement in teacher salaries and according to its president Tengsrang K Sangma said their meeting with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and officials never bore fruit. He said no action was taken even after a petition submitted to Governor Satya Pal Malik last year.
The association is pushing for an increase from Rs 12,000 a month to Rs 20,493, which would put them at par with other teachers in the state according to the principle of ‘equal pay for equal work’.
Sangma said there are 1521 fourth teachers. From these he said the assistant SSA teacher was raised from Rs 9900 to Rs 20, 493 in 2017 while that of the fourth teachers the salary was raised to Rs 12,000 from Rs 6000 that same year. However, the fourth teachers felt that it was discrimination as both the category of teachers are performing the same duty.
Sangma said that though the issue was raised during the budget session of the Legislative Assembly this year nothing changed.
