Meghalaya and Assam, the two north-eastern states hit worst by floods, will have more rain tomorrow.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for both states.
Extremely heavy showers are expected over parts of Meghalaya on June 20, the IMD said
Meanwhile, the IMD has stated that significant rainfall was observed in the past 24 hours over Meghalaya.
As per IMD data, till 8:30 am today, Sohra recorded 252.6 mm of rainfall while Sohra (RKM) recorded 205.4 mm of rainfall.
Mawsynram recorded 238.8 mm of rainfall followed by Shella 195.2 mm, Khliehriat 182.0, Mawphlang 89.5 mm, Mawkyrwat 70.0 mm, Jowai 55.0 mm, Shillong 23.8 mm and Nongstoin 32.0 mm.
Heavy rains in Meghalaya have triggered landslides in many areas of the State for the last few days, leaving behind a trail of destruction including the death of at least 20 people.
Today, a tunnel at Sonapyrdi was blocked by a massive landslide. Efforts are on to clear the debris.
The Maheskhola-Sohhylleng road was also cut off by a landslide. The local market at Maheskhola has been submerged by flood waters due to heavy rains in the area.
Most low lying areas in Garo Hills have been affected by flood.
The road communication between Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya to three neighbouring States of Assam, Mizoram and Tripura has been cut off for the past three days due to collapse of the National Highway-6 in Lumshnong area of East Jaintia Hills and multiple landslides at many stretches.
It may be mentioned that National Highway-6 connects Meghalaya with other states like Mizoram and Tripura along with Barak Valley of Assam.
The highway has been damaged at multiple locations especially from Nongsning to Ratacherra stretch.
Police personnel from Lumshnong and Umkiang along with workers from Meghalaya Cement Ltd, Goldstone Cement Ltd and Dalmia Cement Ltd since yesterday have been distributing food packets, biscuits and water to the passengers and drivers of trucks and other vehicles stranded on the highway.
