Neelam Misra, wife of Meghalaya Governor, Brig BD Mishra (retd) has urged officials of textile and handicrafts department to motivate and assist traditional weavers especially women in ensuring that customary traditions continue to facilitate the progress and development of the society.
Misra interacted with senior officials and self help groups at Raj Bhavan here yesterday.
Impressed by the initiatives in the promotion of local handloom items, the First Lady called upon everyone to take the local product to global markets. She said that that step will guarantee socio-economic empowerment of women.
Documentaries on textiles of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh were screened on the occasion.
Principal Secretary Textile Sampath Kumar, Commission & Secretary Textile F.R. Kharkongor, Director NIFT, Shillong Dr. A. Das, Deputy Commissioner East Khasi Hills, Isawanda Laloo and Secretary Textiles, T. Lyngwa were also present.
Kari Lombi, OSD to Secretary Textile & Handicrafts, Government of Arunachal Pradesh and Ratan Anya, Chairperson, Oju Welfare Association of Arunachal Pradesh attended and interacted with entrepreneurs of Meghalaya.
