An employee of a restaurant here has been arrested by East Khasi Hills police for allegedly killing a female colleague with whom he had an extra-marital affair, police said today.
The accused, identified as Sunai Singh (42), working at Trattoria Restaurant in Central Ward Barik Lachumiere had an argument with the victim emanating from an affair they were having.
The 41-year-old woman, a cleaner in the same restaurant, was identified as Damonica Laloo of Lawsohtun locality. Her body was concealed beside a transformer of KJP Assembly Conference Centre, located next door to the restaurant.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, at 10: 20 am the police were informed by the owner of the restaurant, Batskhem Suting that one of his lady staff was suspected to be murdered in the ground floor of the restaurant.
A team from Sadar PS along with senior officers rushed to the spot and investigation commenced soon after the FSL and Crime Scene Unit arrived, he said.
“Based on evidence collected and preliminary interrogation, the investigating team swiftly zeroed upon the accused, who was immediately arrested,” Syiem said.
The SP said the accused confessed to the crime and disclosed that the motive behind it was an argument on February 27 at about 11 pm after consuming alcohol.
Police have recovered the murder weapon, a hollow iron pipe used in killing her.
Syiem said investigation is underway to establish all the links to the crime.
After an inquest over the body at the place of occurrence, the body was shifted to NEIGRIHMS Hospital for post mortem examination on March 1.
A case has been registered at Sadar PS and the accused will be produced before court.
