Shillong, Jul 1: The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has called on the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to inquire into alleged pollution from the Umiam Distillation Pvt Ltd ethanol plant in Byrnihat after dismissing the clean bill of health that the factory received yesterday from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB).
KHNAM blamed the plant for being a “serious health hazard” in the border town. Video of the factory on social media had sparked concerns over the last few days but the MSPCB yesterday said that the particulate matter levels emitted by the factory are well within limits.
In a letter to the CPCB, KHNAM said that the state pollution board is under the control of the Meghalaya government and therefore “cannot be trusted”.
