In response to the heinous murder of Kyrmen Lyngdoh Nonglait, a resident of Erpakon village in Ri-Bhoi, the Dorbar Shnong of Erpakon organised a public meeting and peace rally today where they demanded life imprisonment for the perpetrator.
The chief suspect in the May 11 murder is Raj Rajbhar. He and Nonglait had reportedly gotten intoxicated when an argument broke out and Rajbhar is alleged to have struck Nonglait with a plank.
Villagers, school students, women’s groups and other organisations participated in the rally today.
Speakers at the public meeting strongly condemned the murder and called on the police to take the matter seriously and to punish the culprit with life imprisonment under the relevant sections of the law. They also condoled the loss of Nonglait, who is survived by a wife and seven young children. A minute’s silence was observed by the attendees in memory of the deceased.
The event concluded with a 2km rally from Erpakon football field to National Highway 6. Rajbhar was burnt in effigy during the rally.
