Leader of the opposition Dr Mukul Sangma today urged the State Security Commission to put an end to any political, social or even other forces trying to influence the police as this result in the abuse of power.
Dr Sangma said that an in-depth discussion pertaining to a number of issues was held but key issues pertained to improving the efficiency of the police organisation, ending the abuse of power and filling up vacancies.
The opposition politician and former Chief Minister flagged the obstacles faced by the police where in many cases they are influenced by political, social or other forces.
Dr Sangma raised concerns about staffing, saying that most police stations and police outposts are severely undermanned, which could have severe consequences, such as the police in them being outnumbered if confronted by a gang or angry mob.
“So if these things can happen then you have to be obviously aware of the possibilities of similar kind of adventurism by any group of criminals and therefore ensure that the police establishment across the states are not seen as vulnerable,” he stated, while stressing on the need for regular recruitment to fill vacancies.
Sangma also confirmed that political interference is very much prevalent hence he had flagged the matter today in the meeting. “This may be on a small scale but for the common man and for helpless people these are not small things, these are big things. Therefore the police should not be weaponised by anybody,” he added, while stating that the public need to have confidence that the police are not affiliated to the parties in power.
