The wild elephant that died due to electrocution was cremated today following an on site post-mortem examination conducted in the forest area near 14 Mer, Byrnihat, where the animal was discovered.
Present at the cremation were the District Forest Officer and Duwaki Rngad, Assistant Professor at St Edmund’s College.
The carcass of the wild elephant was first spotted by residents yesterday. They immediately informed the wildlife authorities, who conducted a thorough investigation.
The cremation was carried out in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act. The post-mortem was conducted by a veterinarian from the Department of Animal Husbandry and the report is awaited. Preliminary findings indicate that this was an unnatural death, suspected to have been caused by electrocution.
