The Meghalaya government today declared that the office of the East Khasi Hills’ Superintendent of Police or Crime Branch will take charge of investigations throughout the eastern range (Khasi-Jaiñtia Hills, including Ri-Bhoi) for certain serious offences.
These offences are those that fall under the ambit of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for which statutory punishment is seven years or more. However, offences relating to crimes against women and children, offences under the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) and notification and offences investigated by the Cyber Crime Wing are excluded.
The Crime Branch will also deal with offences under the National Security Act 1980, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967, Arms Act 1959, Explosive Substances Act 1908, Information Technology Act 2000 and any others specified by the state government.
