A resident of East Garo Hills, Sengbreez N Marak, has asked the central government for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigation into the death of Abdul Ahad Choudhury, a known coal mafia member who was killed by Assam police in an apparent encounter at the beginning of the month.
Marak claimed that Choudhury, who was suspected of being heavily involved in the transport of illegally mined coal from Meghalaya, was killed intentionally to protect top politicians in this state and Assam.
A diary found in his house during his earlier arrest was said to contain details of the bribes he paid to ensure that the coal could pass through Meghalaya and into Assam.
Choudhury, police claim, escaped from custody during a routine medical check following his arrest. When police tracked him down, he opened fire on them, resulting in police retaliating, which led to the escapee’s death.
