Shillong, Oct 23:A heated argument erupted in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) between Leader of the Opposition Titosstarwell Chyne and Executive Member Pynkhrawboklin Kharjahrin over a newspaper headline.
The controversy began when Kharjahrin objected to a vernacular newspaper report headline stating that an MDC had become agitated after being interrupted by the Chairman regarding the issue of professional tax payments, an issue that took centre stage yesterday.
Kharjahrin expressed his disappointment, stating that the report had harmed the council’s reputation. He accused journalists of spreading misinformation and acting as mouthpieces for certain individuals. He urged journalists to take on a responsible role in uplifting society rather than spreading false information.
Chyne raised a point of order, arguing that the media’s reporting should not be a matter for discussion in the House and that Kharjahrin should voice his concerns through other channels. The argument escalated, with Chyne accusing Kharjahrin of attacking the press and attempting to silence them.
In response, Kharjahrin argued that any issue affecting the council’s image was relevant, and he had the right to express his concerns.
