The Shillong Traffic Police has been directed to prevent dumping of construction/building materials and other activities along the roadside as well as overnight parking of vehicles in the city.
An order is this regard was issued by the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police to all police stations within the district following an order from the Meghalaya High Court.
Urging the public to comply with the directive for the safety of road users and pedestrians, the SP said violation will attract penal provisions of the law.
It may be mentioned that the Court on February 7 while hearing a PIL had observed that dumping of construction materials on the roadside and activities carried out on the road itself poses a serious hazard to the flow of traffic and to the lives of pedestrians.
It noted that over-night parking of vehicles owners who do not have proper parking facilities, and who park their cars on the road haphazardly causes traffic congestion, apart from impeding the movement of public service vehicles, like fire trucks and ambulances.
The High Court also noted that workshops which are set-up alongside State roads and National Highways causes obstruction to traffic as cars that go for repair are parked on the road itself.
