Under North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region supports various infrastructure projects in the North East region including Meghalaya.
Under NESIDS (Roads), the ministry has sanctioned two projects for Meghalaya namely Shillong City to Umroi Airport road and Agia -Medhipara – Phulbari – Tura road during 2022-23 for a total outlay of Rs 87.65 crore.
Under NESIDS (OTRI), the ministry has sanctioned a project namely Bulk Water Supply to Adjoining Rural Village of Tura Town with an approved amount of Rs 97.77 crore during financial year 2023-24 for the Meghalaya.
This information was given by the Minister of State of Development of North Eastern Region B LVerma in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today.
The Ministry has been implementing NESIDS since the year 2017-18.
The scheme has been bifurcated into two components namely NESIDS (Roads) and NESIDS (Other than Road Infrastructure or OTRI for short).
Verma also informed that the total number of projects taken up especially in North East during the last five years is 863 with total allocation of Rs 12,572.53 crore, out of which the amount allocated especially for the state of Assam is Rs 2251.62 crore for 130 projects.
He also informed that 136 projects have been completed by the end of 2023.
Stating that 29 projects in Assam were running behind schedule, Verma said that as per the guidelines of the schemes, the cost escalation due to time overrun is to be borne by the concerned State government.
