The Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA) comprising UDP and HSPDP will meet here tomorrow to decide their joint candidate for the Lok Sabha election from Shillong seat.
According to sources, leaders of the RDA including UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh and HSPDP chief K Phlastingwell Pangniang will meet and deliberate on the ticket aspirants for the election.
“The selected name may be announced tomorrow itself,” sources added.
It may be mentioned that former HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin who has joined the UDP recently is the front runner for the ticket from the RDA.
Besides Kharjahrin, other contenders for UDP ticket are Khasi Authors’ Society president D Rockyer L. Nonglait and former Mawlai MLA Process T. Sawkmie.
However, Nonglait has recently opted out of the race citing various reasons. Sawkmie however offered himself if the party had no candidate for the election.
So far, two political parties have announced their candidates for the Lok Sabha election from the State.
NPP has named cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh for the Shillong seat and sitting MP Agatha Sangma for the Tura seat.
The VPP has fielded its general secretary Ricky A J Syngkon as the candidate from Shillong seat.
The Congress however has decided to complete the process of identifying the candidates from the two seats by January 2024. The final decision will be taken by the party high command.
