Shillong, Jun 9: The long-defunct advisory body known as the Meghalaya Resources and Employment Generation Council will be rebuilt, its Chairman Rakkam A Sangma MLA informed today.
Sangma, who recently took over as Chairman of the MREGC, said the council has not been functioning properly for several years, resulting in poor public awareness of its role.
“The objectives of MREGC are very important and there are multiple areas where the council can contribute meaningfully,” Sangma said.
The MREGC is an advisory body under the Planning Department mandated to provide policy inputs to the government and monitor implementation of schemes at all levels.
Sangma disclosed that he has been undergoing treatment in hospital for several months but has given clear directions to the department to ensure full functioning of the MREGC office as mandated.
