Damage to Meghalaya’s electricity grid due to Cyclone Remal has been extensive, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said today, but the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) is working with additional manpower to try and bring the system back online everywhere.
“We are hopeful that the power will be restored in most of the parts of the state very soon,” the CM said. “Already, a major part has been done. But in the next few hours and maybe the next day or two we will see most of the power be restored.”
For all the damage done in various parts of the state, including to individuals, necessary support has been provided by the government, he added. “We have also lost one life in [East] Jaintia Hills and the ex-gratia compensation has been given to the respective family members,” he said, adding that the administration has acted very fast.
The CM congratulated and thanked the officials from the different departments and the district administrations for working hard before the storm hit the state in preparation.
“We’ve taken a detailed review, along with our Deputy Chief Ministers and other officials and we were very happy with the way the administration was prepared. And we have acted pretty swiftly,” Sangma added.
