Meghalaya today witnessed the impact of Cyclone Remal with heavy rainfall across the State.
Remal was the first cyclone to hit the Bay of Bengal this year in advance of the June-September monsoon season.
Heavy rains lashed the State throughout the day today accompanied by squally winds throwing life out of gear.
Traffic on the road from Pynursla to Dawki was disrupted for a few hours today due to a rockslide at a stretch near Pomlum.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall to continue tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the IMD reported that Shella received the heaviest rainfall today measuring 172 mm.
It was followed by Mawsynram (78.2 mm), RKM Sohra (74.4 mm) and Sohra (66.4mm).
The other places which saw heavy rains include Mawphlang (50.6 mm), Mawkyrwat and Williamnagar (43 mm) and Ratacherra (31.1 mm).
Meanwhile, due to heavy rains and strong winds, schools and colleges in most districts of the State will remain closed tomorrow.
The districts that have announced closure of educational institutions for tomorrow include East Khasi Hills, Eastern West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, West Jaintia Hills, West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills and South West Garo Hills.
Authorities cited the adverse weather conditions forecasted by the IMD as the reason behind the precautionary measure.
School authorities have been instructed to secure their buildings and infrastructure, removing any potential projectiles that could pose a danger during high winds.
However, the heavy rainfall did not deter tourists from flocking to Sohra.
Braving the rain, thousands of tourists were seen visiting the scenic tourist destination today.
