As part of its regular drive under the “Swachhata Abhiyan” in Shillong, the 67th Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Dorbar Shnong of Lawmali joined hands to organise a major cleanliness initiative in the area around the Wahumkhrah near the Polo Ground.
As part of the initiative, garbage and other waste accumulated on the river bed are being removed to ease the flow of water along the stretch. In addition, the initiative also involves bolstering the river banks with mud and earth so as to reduce the problem of soil erosion along the stretch.
To raise awareness for the initiative, a programme was organised today in Polo Ground, which was attended by personnel and officers of the CRPF, Commandant Alok Bhattacharya, and Lawmali Dorbar Shnong officials B Khongwir, L Lyngdoh Kynshi, W Lyngwa, as well as residents.
On the occasion, the organisers expressed their long-term commitment to continue with the cleanliness drive in the area. They also expressed their desire to undertake beautification of the river bank through re-forestation and similar initiatives. The organisers also urged the local residents of the area to adopt sustainable garbage disposal practices so as to reduce damage to the local environment.
