The Covid positivity rate in East Khasi Hills district is above 10 per cent causing concern to health authorities.
According to official sources, the case fatality rate is above 2 per cent.
Further, the number of Covid cases in the district and hospital bed occupancy is both still high.
East Khasi Hills is among the 46 districts in India showing more than 10 per cent positivity rate.
On July 31, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan chaired a high-level meeting to review the Covid situation in Meghalaya and nine other states – Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Assam, Mizoram, Andhra Pradesh and Manipur. These states are either reporting a rise in new daily Covid cases or a rise in positivity.
Since more than 80 per cent active cases in these states are reported to be in home isolation, the Health Ministry has directed for effective and strict monitoring of these cases so that they are not intermingling and circulating in their neighborhoods, community, village and spreading the infection.
It was decided that districts reporting a positivity rate of more than 10 per cent need to consider strict restrictions to curtail movement of people, formation of crowds and intermingling of people to prevent spread of infection. It was forcefully underlined that any laxity at this stage will result in deterioration of the situation in these districts.
These states were also advised to ramp up vaccination in the 60+ and 45-60 age categories as evidence shows nearly 80 per cent of the mortality is from these vulnerable age-groups.
