Shillong, May 18: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has expressed concern over “fake news” on social media by attempting to misattribute the achievements of the NPP-led government.
Without citing any particular post, the chief minister criticised the “new trend” of spreading fake news and misleading by fuelling “politically motivated misinformation,” which is detrimental to genuine dialogue and progress.
Sangma stated that the NPP-led administration has consistently maintained restraint and has not exploited its power against the public. “We believe in engaging in discussions,” he asserted, adding that the government listens to the community rather than silencing differing voices.
Speaking at a public programme in Damas, North Garo Hills, he said the NPP-led government has always maintained restraint and has not abused its power against the people. “We have maintained restraint in all situations. Because for us, the people remain central to our agenda for development,” he said.
On recent issues related to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, Sangma said that the government has responded directly to longstanding demands, notably the decision to make ST (Scheduled Tribe) certificates mandatory for contesting GHADC elections.
He pointed out that while past governments had failed to resolve the pressing issue, the NPP-led government, in tandem with the GHADC executive committee, has taken decisive action by amending laws to align with the people’s needs. He noted that a delimitation committee is now in place, working to create a separate electoral roll for the GHADC.
Highlighting various development initiatives from advancements in infrastructure to enhanced healthcare and education systems, he asserted that the government prioritises the welfare of its citizens.
