Shillong, May 18: Four aspirants have applied for the BJP ticket to contest the Shillong Lok Sabah byelection, with the party expecting to take a final decision by May 20.
BJP leader Alexander Laloo Hek confirmed that the party will field its candidate but refrained from disclosing any names.
Speculations are rife about potential candidates like cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai and former IPS officer Mariahom Kharkrang. However, Hek said the decision to choose a candidate is an internal matter that will be announced only after official discussions.
“We are having a meeting on May 20. After the meeting we can decide or zero down to any potential candidate of the party,” Hek said.
The Congress has named its state president, Vincent H. Pala, as its candidate. Similarly, the NPP is set to field Dr. DRL Nonglait, whilst the VPP has nominated its spokesperson, Batskhem Myrboh, for the upcoming by-election.
Meanwhile, Hek said that sitting MLAs and ex-MLAs have approached the party and will be joining the party very soon but declined to comment further, citing the anti-defection law.
