The decision of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to introduce a Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for central varsities will be a blow to Meghalaya students as the test will be based on NCERT textbooks, which are not prescribed in the MBOSE curriculum.
This was stated by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui today. He added that other states will face a similar issue. The CUET will also apply to North-Eastern Hill University, Meghalaya’s only central varsity.
“Students from rural areas who don’t have the facilities will be disadvantaged. Another issue is, looking at past years, the central government introduced the JEE, which meant that many students were made to go for coaching to crack these exams,” he stated, adding that now CUET centres will mushroom.
The minister added said that since the notification has just come out, the state government will try and ensure that students are not disadvantaged.
