Nongpoh, Jun 17: Residents of Lailad area in Ri-Bhoi are once again grappling with connectivity issues after a bamboo bridge across the Umtrew River was washed away by floodwaters following heavy rainfall in the region.
The bridge, which serves as an important link for villagers to access agricultural fields and neighbouring settlements, was swept away on Wednesday morning as the water level of the Umtrew rose sharply due to incessant rain over the past few days.
With the crossing rendered unusable, villagers are now facing difficulties in carrying out their daily activities and agricultural work.
Residents said that the problem is not new, as the makeshift bamboo bridge is frequently damaged or washed away during the monsoon season. Every year, villagers are compelled to rebuild the structure through collective efforts and community support, only to see it destroyed again by strong currents during periods of heavy rainfall.
Expressing frustration over the recurring situation, local residents have appealed to the state government to take immediate measures to construct a permanent bridge over the river.
