Two pressure groups in the Chokpot area have written to the media to highlight what they say is the acute water crisis in the region.
The Garo Students Union (GSU) and Chokpot Area Vigilance Committee (CAVC) said today that they had met with the Sub-Divisional Officer in charge of the Public Health Engineering Department in Chokpot to discuss the Greater Chokpot Water Scheme.
“The SDO assured us of his commitment to expediting the implementation of the scheme and promised to initiate work at the earliest,” the letter to the media said. “Regrettably, despite having a functional PHE office in Chokpot, our community has not received a reliable water supply from the PHE Department for over two decades. We have been solely dependent on the Dareng River for our water needs.”
Despite being sanctioned in 2022, the water scheme has not shown significant progress, they added while asking the Meghalaya government to intervene and expedite the project.
