Shillong, Jul 16: Members of the Northeast Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom gathered at the Indian Gymkhana Club in London recently to celebrate the unique cultural diversity of the region.
The event, named the United Colours of Northeast India, was organised by the North East Indians in UK (NEIUK) and supported by Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, the head of the Tripura royal family. Held on July 11, the event showcased the vibrant traditions, cultures, and heritage of all eight northeastern states to a wider international audience.
Participants from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura immersed attendees in their unique cultures through food, folk songs, music, and art.
Thoiba Thoudam from Manipur said, “It was our desire to bring people together to celebrate the richness and diversity of the region.”
Organisers said the United Colours of Northeast India highlighted the importance of preserving ancestral traditions and passing down cultural knowledge. With over 500 attendees, including families, professionals, and younger generations, the event created an opportunity for cultural exchange and networking.
Attendees, like Cherrie L Chhangte from Mizoram, expressed their nostalgia for home, praising the organisers for their efforts in creating an authentic experience.
Fellisha Marwein noted the significance of fashion in bridging cultural divides, stating, “It was a privilege to represent Meghalaya through the fusion collection.”
Susan Nongsiej, a representative from Meghalaya said the success of the gathering not only showcased the heritage of Northeast but also served as a reminder of the community’s growing visibility, unity, and pride within the UK.
The hope among organisers is that such initiatives will continue to inspire future generations to embrace and celebrate their rich cultural legacy.
