Almost every time that a person goes missing, the body is found dead either in a lake or river.
The latest case is that of Saumitra Chakraborty (48) who went missing from Laban here on September 19.
Chakraborty was found dead in Umiam Lake yesterday. According to the police, the body was found floating in Umiam Lake near Lad Umroi.
It may be mentioned that this is the third case of bodies found floating after the victims went missing within this month.
On September 19, the bodies of a woman and a five-year-old child were discovered in the Umshing river in Mawlai Mawiong.
Niancy Riahtam, who worked at Punjab National Bank, had been seen walking near the ISBT in Mawlai Mawiong with the child, Erika Thabah at around 10 am on September 18.
The bodies of the two were spotted at the river on the next day by some boys who had gone to take bath in the river.
The bodies were taken to Shillong Civil Hospital for post mortem examination to determine the cause of death.
On September 8, a woman’s body was found floating at the Umiam Lake near the main dam on September 7 evening. The deceased was identified as 67-year-old Diamond Chyne of Nongmensong, Shillong. The deceased had been reported missing from her residence on September 7.
Earlier on May 21, the body of 54-year-old Ron Cooper Massar who was reportedly missing was found floating in the Umiam River at Umroi Nongrah, Ri-Bhoi District.
Massar, a resident of Umroi Jaiawpdeng, Ri-Bhoi District, had been reported missing a day before at around 4 am from his residence while he went for a morning jog. He worked as a junior engineer in the Water Resources Department in Shillong.
Many citizens have expressed concern over the rising cases of people going missing and discovery of their bodies from water bodies and secluded places.
“It is high time that police work hard to crack such cases and find out the culprits behind such cases,” citizens said.
