Shillong, Nov 3: A capacity building programme on ‘Tiny plastic, big problem: Awareness on microplastic’ was organized at Kongthong village, East Khasi Hills District.
The programme was organised by the Department of Environmental Studies in collaboration with R & D Cell, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE), Kosi-Katarmal, Almora, Uttarakhand.
Former Director CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow Dr. D. K. Upreti, who attended the programme as chief guest, discussed the introduction, sources, path and effects of microplastics and how it is measured by lichens without machine as biomonitors.
Prof. Tripathi of the Department of Zoology, NEHU emphasised the effect of microplastics in the human body and discussed the pros and cons of the use of plastics.
Sordar of Raid Kongthong Teibor Lynrah highlighted the current status of environmental conservation activities going on in the village.
The programme was attended by 75 participants. The guests also planted trees in the village.
