A large number of people today participated in a candlelight vigil against the death of a youth hit by a police escort en route to the Cherry Blossom Festival on November 15.
Citizens from all walks of life decried the VIP mindset of the high and powerful, which allegedly cost the life of Hudderfield Rymbui.
Speakers at the vigil, which was organised by family and friends of the victim, wanted justice for Hudderfield.
Social activist Angela Rangad said that the people who have allegedly done the act now are accusing the person who is dead for being guilty and the deceased can’t defend himself.
“Instead of leading by example and say that the rule of law will prevail they are doing a smear campaign for a person who is not there among us anymore,” she said.
Rangad said that the smear campaign against the victim is going on a daily basis because those guilty know that they broke the law. She also alleged that the particular minister in the dock stated that he only followed the escort of the chief minister because he knew that as per law he wasn’t entitled to one, but had on that particular day.
She said that since 2013 the Supreme Court had made it clear that there are guidelines on red beacons, only the head of the legislature, head of the executive and head of the judiciary.
She also said that the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly should pass an act which safeguards ordinary people who travel on the road and it should be known as the “Hudderfield Act.”
