Activist Khroo L Pariat today submitted a reminder letter to the Chief Executive Member of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) calling for it to strictly recognise only clan names derived from the mother and not the father, in keeping with matrilineality.
Pariat had first submitted a letter in this regard in November 2022. The issue has resurfaced after the state government decided to act in keeping with the KHADC rules and not issue Scheduled Tribe certificates to those Khasis who use or who have been given their father’s clan name.
The letter also demanded that the JHADC give recognition to the Dorbar Kur and Seng Kur, recognition to the Dorbar Shnong and look into the welfare of the various rivers in Jaintia Hills, like the Kupli, Myntdu, Myntang, Umngot, etc.
