The upcoming Assembly by-elections in the State have led to reduced strength for the Congress party in two district councils.
The party lost two MDCs who decided to jump ship and contest the by-election from other parties.
Lamphrang Blah, leader of opposition in KHADC has quit Congress and joined NPP to contest the by-poll from Mawphlang constituency.
Blah decided to join NPP after Congress allotted the ticket to former MLA Kennedy C. Khyriem.
With Blah quitting the Congress, the strength of the party in KHADC has gone down to seven.
Meanwhile, former Chief Executive Member Pynshngain N. Syiem has been elected as the new leader of opposition in KHADC.
The Congress also faced a setback in Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) when its MDC from Batabari seat Ashahel D. Shira resigned from the party and joined UDP to contest the by-poll from Rajabala.
Shira was apparently unhappy with the decision of Congress to allot the ticket for Rajabala by-election to Hasina Yasmin Mondal, wife of former MLA late Azad Zaman.
Shira was an MLA from Rajabala from 2013 to 2018.
The by-election also saw another sitting MDC deciding to join the by-poll fray.
