Fifty-six cattle that were meant to be smuggled into Bangladesh were rescued by the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya in last 48 hours.
In East Jaintia Hills, troops of 172 Bn BSF Meghalaya foiled the cattle smuggling attempts of miscreants yesterday. The BSF said the driver of the vehicle refused to stop when signalled at Sonapur bridge but accelerated the vehicle toward the Umkiang area. The team pursued the vehicle and also seized the cattle. However, the driver escaped taking advantage of the dense forest along the road and darkness.
The team seized 35 cattle, which were brutally crammed into the vehicle.
The seized cattle and the vehicle were handed over to the Police post Umkiang for further legal action, the BSF said.
In another operation troops of 172 Bn BSF Meghalaya seized 21 cattle, which were concealed in a jungle area near the international border meant for smuggling to Bangladesh. The place of occurrence was not mentioned by the BSF.
