Tura MDC Bernard N Marak has reiterated his accusation that a supposed consultant of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) be terminated and prosecuted under the law for alleged misrepresentation and fraud.
Sumit Kumar Jain has a contract with the GHADC to provide consultancy services worth Rs 8 crore, according to Marak.
In May Marak publicly questioned the legitimacy and transparency of Jain’s appointment. At that time he questioned Jain’s alleged fraud, forgery, cheating, tax evasion, money laundering, and corruption.
Back then, he said that Jain had “falsely represented” himself as a Chartered Accountant and was operating a consultancy in Tura without a non-tribal trading licence.
Yesterday, Marak claimed that Jain had only studied up to Class 10, which should rule him out from a high-value consultancy position. “How can someone with minimal formal education be entrusted with advising on matters involving crores of public funds?” Marak stated during a press interaction.
According to Marak, Jain also has no verifiable affiliation with the Trinamool National Tripura (TNT) party, despite documents suggesting a connection. He labeled the agreement as “misleading” and demanded its immediate cancellation.
In a strongly worded statement, Marak also urged the recently constituted GHADC committee overseeing the contract to remove Jain from the position without delay, arguing that a failure to do so would raise serious questions “about internal collusion or vested interests.”
