Shillong MP Ricky A J Syngkon today met Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the security threat posed to Meghalaya in particular and India in general by the current political instability in Bangladesh.
Syngkon urged Shah to strengthen the security and patrolling of the international border to check illegal migration to Meghalaya.
The Home Minister assured to maintain a strict all round vigil of the border under the monitor of an Inspector General rank official of the BSF.
Further, Syngkon urged Shah to look into and address the problem of extortion by police personnel along the national highways in the State.
Meanwhile, the BSF Meghalaya Frontier, which manages a 444 km stretch of the international border with Bangladesh, has intensified its security measures to ensure effective border control and management.
BSF Meghalaya Frontier Inspector General Harbax Singh Dhillon today said that troops and field commanders are fully briefed and vigilant regarding the current situation in Bangladesh.
He said that the situation across the international border is being closely monitored to address any unforeseen issues and senior officers and commandants have been stationed at the border and are operating in mission mode.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya state government has imposed a night curfew along the entire international border to prevent any movement of people from India to Bangladesh and vice versa.
