The East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner has prohibited the movement of heavily loaded vehicles weighing over 9 tonnes on the bridge along the Nongspung-Laitmawsiang Road effective immediately.
The decision was made citing public safety concerns, as the bridge has a load capacity of only 9 tonnes and is already weak due to the plying of heavy vehicles.
The order, which will remain in force indefinitely, aims to prevent further damage to the bridge, especially since renovation work on the road is currently underway.
