Khliehriat, May 14: East Jaintia Hills district seized 30,000 explosive detonators from a vehicle and arrested two persons during a naka checking operation at Umkiang.
Police intercepted a white hatchback car bearing registration number AS-10-A-5916 at 2 Kilo in Umkiang village at around 2.30 am on the intervening night of Thursday while the vehicle was reportedly heading towards Silchar in Assam.
Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Rasgania said the explosive detonators were concealed inside two carton boxes and a gunny bag and transported illegally.
The arrested persons were identified as Kamrul Ali Laskar of Jamalpur and Ibrahim Uddin Laskar of Loknathpur, both from Assam’s Cachar district.
A criminal case has been registered at Lumshnong Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Explosive Substances Act. Investigation has been launched to trace the source and intended destination of the explosives.
